Quotes from Participating Organizations

Ahmad Abuznaid, Executive Director of the U.S. Campaign for Palestinian Rights: “We are mourning our Palestinian kin being massacred as we watch in horror from our phones, and as the survivors continue to live through a U.S.-backed genocide. Our broad coalition will not sit idly by as Joe Biden uses migrant communities as a bargaining chip to keep fueling Israel's bombing of Gaza. We are strong and we won’t back down.”

Sandra Tamari, Executive Director of the Adalah Justice Project: "We stand together, linked arm and arm, to say no to more weapons for Israel's genocide in Gaza, no more money to imprison children and families seeking safety at our border, no more money to destroy lives. The Democratic leadership and the Biden Administration are failing the people."

Saqib Bhatti, Co-Executive Director of the Action Center on Race and the Economy: “I am so proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with the leaders of dozens of powerful organizations, and the millions of Americans they represent to call for a permanent ceasefire now, and a restoration of human rights and dignity at the Southern Border and in Gaza. I am here because my government is using my taxpayer dollars to carry out a genocide against people who look just like me in Gaza and to keep immigrant families that look just like mine out of this country. As civic leaders in the United States, we have a moral responsibility to speak out against senseless militarism and advocate for desperately needed investments in housing, healthcare, and education here at home. We are here to stand up for innocent Palestinians, immigrants, and for the vast majority of the American people who are demanding an end to the bloodshed. We need a permanent ceasefire today and to begin the hard work of repairing the damage our billions of dollars in military aid has done to the Palestinian people.”

Cindy Wiesner, Executive Director of the Grassroots Global Justice Alliance: "For a vibrant, healthy democracy to prosper, civil society plays a critical role in keeping those with governing power accountable to the needs of the people.  Right now individuals and organizations are being censored, silenced, penalized, and defunded for taking a moral and political stance to call for a permanent ceasefire in Palestine. By penalizing those who speak out against genocide; academia, philanthropy, and the media are creating a pathway for the undercutting of democracy and the rise of authoritarianism.  It is essential for a real democracy to ensure enough funding for the basic needs and livelihoods of its people, especially housing, healthcare, care of children and elders, access to healthy food and water. Instead of investing in the needs of our communities, the U.S. Congress and the Biden administration are negotiating a $106 billion package to move even more funds to war and weapons that are destroying homes, cultural institutions, food and health infrastructure in Gaza, while also locking in more funds to further criminalize migrants at the US Mexico border. The genocide in Gaza must end, and it is beyond shameful that elected officials are using this moment to advance policies that will harm even more communities.”

Setareh Ghandehari, Advocacy Director of the Detention Watch Network: “We condemn any and all attempts to use immigrants as a bargaining chip for international military aid and are deeply outraged and alarmed that the Biden administration has signaled that it is willing to do so. These anti-immigrant concessions are unacceptable, inhumane, and send a dangerous message that immigrant and refugee lives are expendable. Militarizing our borders and incarcerating migrants has never made our communities more safe, and neither has propagating this agenda abroad. Detention Watch Network is in solidarity with the Palestinian people and our many partners and allies in demanding an immediate ceasefire and urging members of Congress vehemently reject Biden's funding request."

Loan Tran, National Director of Rising Majority: “It has become increasingly clear in recent weeks how out of touch Congress and the Biden administration are with the will of the people. Trillions of taxpayer dollars are spent on genocide, occupation, weapons, and wars while our communities suffer without access to quality healthcare, public education, and affordable housing. Congress has the audacity to claim that their actions are for our safety, but we ask: how does bombing Palestinian families, homes, schools, and hospitals make it safe for the millions at home who are unsafe at the hands of police, border enforcement, prisons, poverty, and houselessness? The time is now to end support for U.S military violence—from Palestine to the southern border. We will not remain silent and our communities will remember that when the question was called, Congress chose death and destruction over the sanctity of human life.”

Sara Bissrat Mersha, Co-Executive Director of Grassroots International: “Many of us are personally connected to colleagues who have been killed in Gaza, often alongside their entire families in the dead of night, and others who are zigzagging across the tiny strip, desperately trying to survive without adequate food, water, and shelter as bombs rain down around them. As a mother, I feel the raw pain of Palestinian mothers sobbing over their children’s bodies as they take their last breath. I could not watch from home as Congress votes on whether or not to send more bombs to commit a genocide. We stand with the majority of people in the US who want a humanitarian ceasefire now.”

Stefanie Fox, Executive Director of JVP Action: “We are here to say: ENOUGH. No more weapons to an authoritarian Israeli regime that uses our money to carry out genocide against Palestinians. No more inhumane, anti-immigrant funding to militarize our borders and criminalize migrants and refugees. We refuse to allow our government to continue fueling and funding violence and death from the US to Israel/Palestine. It’s time for our government to finally learn to prioritize human life over militarism, the safety and dignity of our communities over the profits of weapons manufacturers, and human rights over endless war.”

Carolyn Tran, Executive Director of Communities United for Status & Protection (CUSP): "As a collaborative of Black, Arab and Asian immigrant rights organizations working together to win protection and safety for our communities, we strongly urge the administration to change course on the on-going negotiations and recent immigration proposals in the $106 billion spending package. For its alarming $14.3 billion funding allocation to Israel to continue its horrific siege on Gaza and the implementation of permanent immigration policy changes that will negatively impact asylum seekers and other members of immigrant communities within the United States. We stand in solidarity with other human rights leaders in calling for a permanent ceasefire and to redirect our dollars in supporting systems of care like economic justice, affordable housing, healthcare and education that help our communities thrive. Implementing these proposals would tragically result in returning many to persecution and danger, disproportionately affecting Black, Brown, and Indigenous refugees who are already marginalized on a global scale. It is time we end support for U.S. military violence and put our voices together to prioritize the preservation of human life above all else.”

Analilia Mejia, Co-Executive Director, Center for Popular Democracy: "At the Center for Popular Democracy, our membership has made it clear that they join the vast majority of the American people and the world in crying out for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza. We believe the possibility of peace is in all of our hands. The Israeli government’s collective punishment of civilians in Gaza for Hamas’ terror attack is horrifying and pushes peace and the safe return of hostages further from reach. We call on our government to demand a permanent ceasefire to save lives, bring the hostages home, and allow critically-needed humanitarian aid to enter Gaza."

Ivanna Gonzalez, Campaigns Director of Florida Rising: "Our people-powered organization has registered over 200,000 people to vote, that helped pass one of the largest voter re-enfranchisement since women's suffrage and the first statewide $15 minimum wage in the South; that is in 11 counties winning policies and elections to create a Florida where Black and brown people can be happy, healthy and whole calls for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, an end to US-funding of the Israeli government’s war crimes against the Palestinian people, and a stop to Islamophobic and anti-Semitic hate crimes here at home. We call on Florida’s congressional representatives to let our tax dollars, our words, and our actions seed freedom, housing, healthcare, and hope, instead of war and despair."

Hannah Sassaman, Executive Director of the People's Tech Project: "The Israeli military is using ugly, blunt algorithms to manufacture thousands of targets to guide its drones and missiles, killing scores of Palestinian people in the name of self defense. Our Congress funds technology like this in the billions; tech that is then deployed by police, border patrol, and corporations here in the US and around the world. I'm taking action today to say Congress must vote no on this supplemental spending package, stop funding Israel's war on Gaza, the militarization of the US border, and the persecution of immigrants and all oppressed people in this country."

Rod Adams, Executive Director of The New Justice Project MN: “The Biden administration and campaign has said they are the last line of defense when protecting American democracy, but the concept of living in a democracy falls flat when polling shows 48% of likely Democratic voters support a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, the point is our communities will not forget the drowning out of our voices come November 2024. This administration and our leadership on Capitol Hill undoubtedly has the blood of innocent Palestinian women and children on their hands, yet they still have a choice to make, a choice they should have made several weeks ago. That choice is to listen to young people, listen to the people who elected you and listen to the rest of the world who know that what’s happening in Gaza is genocide and an atrocity that will have lasting reverberations for years to come on our ability to protect our democracy at home and stifle our credibility to foster lasting peace in the Middle East we are coming to DC to make them listen and to stop the senseless violence we have seen everyday since October 7th.”

Elianne Farhat, Executive Director of TakeAction Minnesota: “At TakeAction Minnesota, we believe in a world where every single person has what they need to live full, happy, healthy, and safe lives. We organize with our neighbors here in Minnesota to win a joyful future for all of us: from Red Lake to Red Wing, from Minnesota to the southern border, from the United States to the Middle East. We know we can win peace by acting together. That’s why tens of thousands of Minnesotans across race, religion and geography have taken action in the past two months calling for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza. Today, decision makers in D.C. are considering a deadly deal that only delivers more pain, more suffering, and more death in a world already drowning in them. If passed, it would send billions of no-strings-attached money to fuel Israel’s war on innocent Palestinians and further militarize the southern border. We can and must choose a different way. I am proud to link arms with civic leaders from across the United States to call for a better, smarter path forward. The United States has a moral responsibility to use our considerable power, and our taxpayer dollars, towards building a better world for our children, grandchildren and future generations. The first step toward achieving a just and lasting peace is a permanent ceasefire, an end to military aid fueling violence, humane and inclusive immigration policies, and abundant humanitarian aid.”

Ryan Gerety, Director, Athena Coalition: “In this country, we have the resources and ingenuity to make sure everyone can have a full and happy life. That is what our government should be focused on everyday. Instead, the administration and some members of Congress are wanting to pour money into needless border security and military support for the Israeli government, as it wages a barbaric and genocidal war on Gaza. This spending package takes an unbearable toll on human life in the United States, on the border, and in Palestine. The stakes could not be higher.”

Yahya Alazrak, Executive Director, Resource Generation: “We, as young people with access to wealth, demand our country not fund the massacre in Gaza and join the world in calling for a permanent ceasefire. Our country's resources should support communities to thrive through global projects of redistribution and reparations. Our money should not be used to terrorize others.

Meher Rehman, Survivors Know: “As an organization committed to eradicating power-based violence, we cannot and will not remain silent. Survivors Know condemns the ongoing genocide and dehumanization we all bear witness to. We stand in solidarity, urging a call for an immediate ceasefire, and remain steadfast in our commitment to fostering love and peace. We demand that the Biden administration and Congress stop using our taxpayer money to commit violence against our communities in the U.S. and abroad, and instead invest in violence prevention programs in the U.S.”

Darakshan Raja, Executive Director of Muslims for Just Futures: "As an organization that works to build just futures, we join over 50 organizational leaders today and call on Congress to reject the $106 billion supplemental funding following the colossal $886 billion Pentagon budget approval. The proposed $14.3 billion for Israel would fuel the ongoing genocide of Palestinians. Moreover, additional funding to CBP and ICE would further criminalize refugees, migrants, and asylum seekers who are often fleeing violence fueled by US foreign policy.  Therefore, Congress must redirect its priorities from investing in death and genocide to supporting systems of care. Congress must support a permanent ceasefire, and ensure taxpayer funds don't back genocide or oppression. Budgets are moral documents and Congress must divest from militarism and the ‘War on Terror’ and invest in actual community needs like economic justice, affordable housing, healthcare, education, and just transition."

Janette Zahia Corcelius, rank & file member of OPEIU Local 12: “Labor must speak out against all forms of oppression and injustice— no matter who it is happening to and where it is occurring. As an Arab-American woman, I will continue to hold my union comrades accountable to stand up against the apartheid and genocide of Palestinian people on their land because it happened here in the United States, too. Indigenous people here and abroad dream of decolonization— It’s time we make it a reality.”

Zahra Billoo, Esq., Executive Director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, San Francisco Bay Area Office: "Since October 7, my days begin and end with tears and heartbreak for the defenseless, innocent people in Gaza—men, women, and children living in constant fear, aware that any moment could be their last. Tragically, for over 18,000, this has become a reality. Every day, their faith and resilience inspire me to demand that my government—complicit in Israel's war crimes—use its influence to call for a ceasefire and an end to the unimaginable suffering. Instead, U.S. elected leaders are choosing to prolong the genocide by seeking an additional $14.3 billion in American tax dollars for military aid to Israel. More unconscionable is their readiness to compromise another vulnerable group—immigrants seeking asylum—as a trade-off for the funding. It is imperative that elected officials listen to their constituents—66 percent of whom support an immediate ceasefire—and recognize that Israel hasn't just 'started' to lose the support of the international community. Last week's UN General Assembly vote proves it's already gone. The only humane solution to avert a deepening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, now exacerbated by the spread of infectious diseases, is to implement a ceasefire NOW."

Audrey Sasson, Executive Director of Jews For Racial & Economic Justice: “As a Jewish leader, watching the Palestinian death toll rise daily, I won’t be silent. This violence is being defended in the name of Jewish safety, with the people’s tax dollars, in a political deal that doubles down on Trump-era immigration policies. I’m proud to join with leaders from across the country representing the grassroots organizing that is delivering real material and transformative change for housing, healthcare, education, jobs, and real democracy – everything we need to live whole and dignified lives. We demand our government invest in these programs and divest from war and militarism.”

Navina Khanna, Executive Director of the HEAL Food Alliance: “Everywhere I look, I see beautiful acts of resistance. Poetry and prayer; protests and possibility. People saying no to this genocide, no to using our tax dollars to fund it. Our policymakers don’t seem to hear us. Millions right here in the US - alongside even more around the world - are taking to the streets. We’ve been calling and emailing our electeds every day. They are failing their constituents. So we are here to make it crystal clear that the people demand a permanent and immediate ceasefire. An end to the US funding an endless war. As the leader of an alliance whose 43 organizations represent 2 million people working to repair a destructive system founded on genocide and land theft, I cannot stand idly by when my government is funding the same things in Gaza. I will not be complicit in mass murder.”

Steven Renderos, Executive Director of Media Justice: “We demand that our leaders in government end the violence in Gaza and secure an immediate ceasefire. Those in power win when we believe that our struggles for freedom and liberation are separate. I’m proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with leaders of several social movements, a show of unity that our struggles against colonialism, capitalism and authoritarianism are linked and we will not be silent. At MediaJustice we are fighting for a future where we are all connected, represented and free. I truly believe that vision brings us closer to a Free Palestine.”
